Job Description

Portsea Camp is a public benevolent institution whose mission is to run school holiday camps for disadvantaged and special needs children. In order to meet costs of the mission the camp is occupied by school, community and religious groups during term times and on weekends. The camp began in 1945 as the Lord Mayor’s Camp for Country Children and is one of Australia’s best-known and respected children’s charities.

Our Directors, staff and volunteers are an outstanding group of hard-working people, committed to ‘making a difference’ in children’s lives. We are confident and capable – both working individually and as a team.

Whilst we gain immense satisfaction running our ‘general’ camps, our ‘mission camps’ are where everything comes together, particularly in January, when three week-long camps are run, each with around 270 9-12 year old children, and 60 volunteers focusing on running a fantastic recreation program, ensuring children’s general and health care needs are met.

This is a most exciting and unique position, available for the first time in the past 17 years, and we are committed to getting the best new team member we can.

The role in a nutshell

The Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of the camp’s recreation program, including:

  • planning and delivering recreation programs to approximately 100 schools and community groups each year, and 5 to 7 week-long, school holiday camps for up to 270 children at each,
  • purchase, storage and maintenance of recreation equipment,
  • employment, training and managing permanent and casual staff and volunteers,
  • ensuring that all specialized activities are run in accordance with industry standards,
  • liaison with camp administration, catering, maintenance, finance and housekeeping staff.

Basic expectations

The successful applicant will:

  • have broad and extensive industry experience and qualifications,
  • be an out-going, dynamic leader and team player,
  • have a calm, warm disposition,
  • hold a driver’s license, have a working with children check and an acceptable police check,
  • be looking for a position that includes significant lifestyle benefits.

The lifestyle and rewards

A generous salary package is offered, details of which can be found in the position description. The successful applicant will be provided with on-site housing in a small 2-bedroom cottage for their / their family’s use. The cottage is situated in a quiet corner of the 7-acre site, just a two-minute walk across the camp oval to Portsea front beach, and with million dollar views of the Bay. Not many people get the opportunity to work in such a beautiful environment with such an array of recreation equipment, walk 200m to work, or call Portsea home.

All applicants are required to refer to the position description, available from Di at

Applicants are encouraged to make a time to visit the camp to familiarise themselves with what is on offer. Please call Di on (03) 5984 2333.

Closing date: 5pm Sunday 24th July, 2016.
